Breed Profile

Curly Coated Retriever

Trainability

4 /5

Like with all retrievers, this breed loves to learn. They thrive and excel in all forms of training and dog sports. Originally bred to retrieve game from land and water, they simply adore to run and swim. Because of this training is a must. A good recall command and basic manners should be taught from a young age so that your adorable Curly Coat can run free and enjoy exploring. Early obedience is recommended to ensure you raise a well-adjusted and well-rounded dog. Socialisation is also important, as with all breeds. Lots of sounds, sights and experiences in the early days will ensure your Curly Coat is well mannered and confident. They can tend to get bored during training exercises and need variety and creativity to keep them entertained. A great dog sport champion that will excel in this wonderful activity. Consider flyball or agility for an extra boost to their exercise regime.

Grooming

2 /5

The Curly Coat Retriever has a very stunning and unique coat that will require some grooming throughout the year to keep the coat in good condition. The coat is very water and weather resistant and shouldn’t be over brushed to prevent a frizzy appearance. They will seasonally shed, and additional grooming may be required during these times. Being a waterproof breed, they do not require much bathing, unless they have found something extra stinky to roll in. Always use a specially formulated dog shampoo to prevent skin problems.

Exercise Requirements

5 /5

This breed is an exercise machine and will become destructive if not exercised correctly. They will require a good 30min run or vigorous activity each day. A good walk first thing in the morning followed by an off-leash run in the afternoon will keep your Curly happy and entertained. They make wonderful jogging companions and are perfectly suited to a busy active household.

Intelligence

4 /5

Like all retriever breeds, your Curly is very smart. Because of this, if they are not exercised correctly and given enough mental stimulation you may find your precious pup will become very destructive when bored. Consider boredom busting activities when you are not at home, and plenty of room to romp. These dogs do not take well to life in an apartment. They are very energetic dogs that like to run and play. The Curly will take longer than some breeds to mature so you will enjoy the puppy stage much longer than some owners. Because of this mental and physical stimulation is vital to prevent problems and keep your pup happy.

Family Friendly

5 /5

The Curly Coat makes a wonderful family dog who is very affectionate and loyal. They simply love a good play and run followed by sleeping the evening away at your feet. They are good with children of all ages and will enjoy playing and running. Super easy to train so games such as fetch is a perfect way to get your children interacting with your bundle of energy. Like with all dogs, care must be taken with smaller children and always teach your child how to safely interact with your dog.

Indoor/ Outdoor

Regardless of their waterproof coat, the Curly will be at his/her happiest when beside you. They do not take well to life in a kennel or outside constantly. Keep them occupied in the day with boredom busters after a good dose of exercise and you’ll find your beloved dog will happily curl up at your feet for a peaceful evening indoors. Ensure you provide ample shade and water and also a warm spot to laze the day away during the cooler months.

Breeding

It is very important to only source your new family member from a reputable breeding establishment, to ensure your puppy is healthy. Ask all the important questions about hereditary problems and ask to see mum and dad. Contact your local breed club and research your chosen breeder. Your breeder should have proof that they regularly test their dogs for genetic diseases and to ensure that the dogs they are breeding from have sound temperaments. It may take a little more time than a quick purchase, but it can save you and your family from unimaginable heartache and pain dealing with a sick puppy.
